Comics Bundle: 04.15.09

I'm feeling kinda lazy today, and also out of time because of Warhammer Online. So I'm going to write a break-neck speed review here.

Deadpool #9

This issue reminds me a lot of the classic Deadpool books. Everything from his bouts with Taskmaster and to being in love -this time with Yelena Belova, the second Black Widow and leader of the Thunderbolts. So, as usual, there are tons of laughs and wittiness to be had with the theme, as well as gunpowder and explosion. The only thing I didn't like about the book is that the Thunderbolts are acting nuts as much as Deapool.

Uncanny X-Men # 507

I've been enjoying the Uncanny X-Men since their move to San Francisco. They're much more down to earth (no space or dimension faring) and are dealing with local problems such as hate groups or taking in refugees. The only thing I don't like about the book is that there are way too many things going on in every issue, spreading each book thin. But what got me excited about this issue, in particular, is the return of Psylocke. Yup, the psychic ninja, the British chick trapped inside a hot Asian body is finally back.

The Walking Dead #60
7.8 of 10
The Walking Dead is always a good balance of action and drama. That's why I like it because it doesn't remain stagnant. In this issue, it's more of action than drama and character study. Rick and their group stumbled upon a zombie herd, the biggest one they've seen. So that made them run...again. So Dale, one of the longest surviving characters in the book and a friend of Rick, is doubting Rick's capability to lead this time. But other than the running around and Dale's character shift, this issue actually got me bored.

Fables #83

This issue is the first of the Great Fables Crossover story arc. I'm not pretty sure about what the whole arc is about but, with Jack spilling in the magic beans, the Fables are finally going to meet their makers, the very writers who created them, the Literals. Plus, the fight between Bigby and Beast is one hell of a spectacle.

Secret Warriors #3
9.0 of 10
One thing about this series is that it's consistently strong and, under Johnathan Hickman, I don't see it buckling anytime soon. The young heroes in the book are developing nicely. Especially after they were defeated during their first combat with Gorgon, one of the ruling council of HYDRA. You'd even see Nick Fury in a different shade in this issue, an old veteran who had lost everything. Then there's also the new HYDRA, which is now more menacing and ruthless than ever. This book is definitely one of the best Marvel titles that came out in years. So be sure to pick this one up if you like comics.

Comics Bundle: 03.25.09 Pt. 1

By now, you guys probably know that I'm always late with my comic reviews. So I'm not gonna apologize for my tardiness anymore. Anyways, I kinda of noticed that there were a lot of Avengers and Deadpool appreances in this bundle. That's fine by me though. Because more Deadpool means more fun.

Secret Warriors #2

The first issue of Secret Warriors hit me like Mjolnir. So far, I think it's an audacious series with the most audacious plot that Marvel has put into play. Like the kind of audacity that will shake the foundations of the Marvel Universe. Unfortunately, I won't reveal any of the plot details in issue #1 and #2, they're just too precious. Let's just say that the issue #1 was followed up nicely in issue #2 by introducing what Nick Fury and his kids will be facing, a revisioned and reinvigorated Hydra.

Deadpool: Games of Death #1

This one-shot issue is definitely the funniest, most violent Deadpool comics I've read since he came back. Hired by a man -known as Mr. Kilgore- to track down his only son, The Merc with the Mouth ends up disguising as an old martial arts master and participating in an illegal reality-TV show that pits its contestants to a game of death. The whole deathmatch setting is a playground to Deadpool's insanity. There's a lot of slapstick humor, blood and decapitation that will keep you entertained.

Thunderbolts #130

Deadpool, like Wolverine, is almost everywhere these days. He have an ongoing series, an upcoming mini-series, an appreance in the Messiah War and a crossover with the Thunderbolts. So far, the first issue of Thunderbolts/Deadpool crossover is an enjoyable one. I really liked it because it has lots of humor and action, it actually feels more like Deadpool book than a Thunderbolts. Plus, Deadpool owns Thunderbolts' face too. The only thing I didn't like about it is perhaps the art.

The New Avengers #51

A few months ago, when Marvel announced that Dr. Strange will select a new Sorcerer Supreme in The New Avengers #51, I've been dying to get my hands on this issue. However, now that I've actually read the issue, everything was just a hype. The only saving grace in this issue is the part where Spider-Man revealed his alter ego to the rest of the New Avengers. Albeit short, it was a fun moment to read.

Runaways #8

Runaways is probably one of my favorite comic book series. It's just a fun title to read because it lets teenagers act like teenagers, even though they have superhuman abilities. I must admit, however, without Brian K. Vauhgn in its helm, the series is not what it's used to be. Fortunately, this issue (and also the last) have been an enjoyable read. The kids are acting like their kids again and they also face a new enemy: Van Rhymin, the shock-jock who's been turning the silicone enhanced residents of LA into zombies. Now what's more fun than that?

Comics Bundle: 02.18.09 Pt. 1

I haven't picked up my comics for some time...like a month. So I ended up reading a bundle of comics that were released in the last four weeks. I enjoyed reading it, of course. But writing decent reviews about these books is too much for me. So I decided to split these into two parts (click here for part two), and I'll go fast too so I can get back to playing my new game, Dawn of War II.

Thor #600

Thor finally jumps to its 600th issue, and it's a heck of an issue. Loki, after scheming and planning in the past 12 issues, finally set his motion into plan by resurrecting Bor, Odin's father, and bound him with a reality distorting spell that sent him rampaging. Eventually, Thor defeated Bor, who unbeknownst to him was his grandfather and the king of Asgard. Bor's death carried great repurcussions and it all fell on Thor's shoulders, changing the course of this title. From here on, I think it's going to get darker with Loki having more room to move about.

The Dark Avengers #2

I didn't like this issue as much as the first. But the sarcasm and perversity still continues in this issue (which reminds me of Warren Ellis' run on the Thunderbolts) and that's what makes this title different from other books. The fun dialogue between bad guys who are trying to be good public figures is still worth my $3.00.

Wolverine: Manifest Destiny #4

This, perhaps, is the only Manifest Destiny tie-in that I really liked. It's a lot of fun and brings me back to my childhood watching Kung Fu films. In this series' conclusion, the reason why Logan ticked off the Chinatown Tongs was finally revealed. We also see Wolverine at his best, fighting the Black Dragon Tong and defeated most of them without "snikting" he claws out. But the most fun of all, we finally know what makes him happy, which were few: Jean Grey, Mariko Yashida, Beer and killing people.

X-Men: Magneto Testament #5

This title has finally reached its conclusion. I've been waiting for this issue to see what happens in the end. In truth, I was disappointed at first. I thought I'd see Magneto hurling train cars at the Nazi. But that didn't happen. Then I remembered that this isn't really a Magneto origins book. It's about his testament, his solemn vow that he won't stand idly, fearing any kind of reprisals, and let any genocide happen again. So far, as we know it, he's not standing around anymore, and have been fighting to prevent mutant genocide.

Secret Warriors #1

I thought it was very cool when I saw the Secret Warriors being assembled, in the pages of Secret Invasion tie-in of The Mighty Avengers, by Nick Fury. The idea of a hardened veteran mentoring a group of unknown and unproven super powered teenagers just got me going. It's like The Runaways in boot camp. Now they have their own series and the first issue was a lot of fun and full of character. But the best thing about this issue is the revelation in the end. I won't talk about it because it's so big...probably bigger than Dark Reign.
