Hiatus and the Big List

For the next two weeks, I'm going to stay away from my computer and any other electronic devices (except for my cellphone). Hence, no blog updates until then.

I'm not doing this because of Lent, however. I don't believe that sacrificing what I love to do (gaming, listening to music) will save me a seat in heaven. Besides, Lent is almost over. The reason why I'm doing this is that I want to finish reading my back logs. I still have 17 books and graphic novels on my "unread items" list. I need to start crossing out some stuff on that list, and fast.

Also, when I get back from my hiatus, I'm going to start a list. The list will be similar to the "Best of [insert year here]" that I do annually. Except this is going to be bigger. Yeah, I will compile all of the things that I love in the past decade (2000 - 2009). I will also include other things like comics, anime and TV, not just games, music, books and movies. I know it's late but I love doing lists.

So, until then. Have fun in the next 2 weeks.

Blizzard in Spring

The last week of winter was very pleasant. The sun was shining all day, every day and the temperature was in the mid-60's. The first day of spring, however, was abysmal. It snowed.

Yet, even though the temperature was freezing yesterday, all I can think about was getting myself a Strawberry Cheesequake Blizzard ice cream from Dairy Queen. My craving for the said frozen confection was so paralyzing I couldn't get myself to do anything, even read comics or play games. So, even though the road was slippery with ice, I drove to the nearest DQ just to satiate my appetite.

Sadly, the nearest DQ from my place is at a mall. I detest going to malls. Being surrounded by high school mall rats makes me old and cynical these days. But since it was snowing outside, I thought that the bad weather might turn the mall into a desolate building, devoid of teenyboppers. But I was wrong. It's almost time for the promenade so the mall was crawling with teenagers, hunting for coats and gowns to wear on that "special" school event. It was scary.

But, with or without teenagers, I waded through the crowd with one purpose: to get my Strawberry Cheesquake Blizzard. I single-mindedly moved towards DQ, ignoring the shoppers until I reached my destination. When I did, I ordered a large cup of Blizzard. The first spoonful I had made everything disappear. It was heaven.

Another Year, Another Checklist

In conjunction to my resolutions post (which you can read here), I have decided to make a checklist of the things I want to this year in order to keep track of what I've accomplished. This idea was inspired by and borrowed from Julie Powell's blog, Julie/Julia Project, after watching the movie Julie & Julia. However, instead of cooking 536 recipes in 365 days, I have 251 game achievements to unlock, 41 character levels to reach and 90 books to read in less than a year.

Unlocked Game Achievements

  • Batman: Arkham Asylum - 29 out of 47
  • Fallout 3 - 3 out of 72
  • Dragon Age - 49 out of 87
  • Mass Effect 2 - 0 out of 50
  • Torchlight - 36 out of 62
  • Left 4 Dead 2 - 0 out of 50
Character Levels and Renown to Reach
  • Champions Online - 12 levels out of 40
  • Warhammer Online - 47 renown out of 60
Books to Read
  • Philip K. Dick novels 1 out of 46
  • Ernest Hemingway novels 0 out of 9
  • Back logs read 0 out of 20
  • New books read 0 out of 16
Looks like I'm going to lose a lot of sleep this year. So do you think I can do it? I think, no. I can only accomplish half ot it. I know, because I like to half-ass things.

Just Another Resolution Post

At this point, the blogosphere must be suffocating with all the New Year's resolutions that have been posted this week. Unfortunately, as much as I want to deny that this isn't one of those posts, I must let you suffer through another round of "resolutions". I promise, though, that it will be quick.

Here are my resolutions for 2010

  1. Only buy games that are on sale or if their prices have dropped (Mass Effect 2 and Guild Wars 2 are an exception).
  2. Replay some of my older games and, if available, unlock all their achievements.
  3. Reach renown rank 60 and don a full Invader set in Warhammer Online.
  4. Reach level 40 in Champions Online.
  5. Only buy used hardcover books.
  6. Read all of my back log books and graphic novels before getting new books to read.
  7. Read all novels by Philip K. Dick.
  8. Read all novels by Ernest Hemingway.
  9. Maintain comic book spending at $40/month, and become a trade waiter instead.
  10. Brush up my blues guitar skills.
That's that. Short and effortless to do. Not like losing weight or getting a wife.

Let It Snow and Spin

Right now, I'm as drunk as a blind ostrich who just ran on 355 and got hit by a 10 wheeler UPS truck, trying to catch up on last minute Christmas deliveries and devilries. Yes, it was our Christmas Party at work, today. We did it cheap this year and held the party at our boss's house, instead of dining out on a fancy restaurant. We also started early, 1 PM, because we're trying to avoid driving late at night in the middle of a snowstorm.

By 5 PM, my vision is blurred, voice is slurred. Already drunk.

At 7 PM, my Secret Santa gave me this:Let The Great World Spin, written by Colum McCann. I have no idea what this book is about, actually. All I know is that it's the winner of the National Book Award and also Amazon's #1 book of 2009. So it's one of those things that you just want because it's so shiny. Plus, it's only $10, which makes it the perfect item for my Secret Santa wishlist.

I wish I could start reading it now. But I'm so buzzed up. So tomorrow, then.

Dark Deals

It's Black Friday, also known as the Day After Thanksgiving. It marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season, and retailers all over the U.S. offer a lot of sweet deals on just about everything. In fact, their offers are so enticing that a lot of people camped outside their stores since yesterday noon, in the cold, entirely missing Thanksgiving, just so they could snag that door buster/early bird item. Most of them are doing it out of necessity though -like buying a laptop for school or a new vacuum cleaner for the house- so I don't blame them.

I, however, decided not to go to the stores this year. My reason is because, while the early deals are good, it can get pretty scary out there. This is the time of the year when people fight and die over a parking lot or the last PS3 bundle, you know. Then there's also the loud and obnoxious shoppers, who seems to always want to stop and talk in the middle of the aisle, completely halting the flow of the mob, you being stuck between the sea of consumers. In addition, I didn't feel like getting up early and there isn't any good Xbox 360 deals .

But I didn't avoid Black Friday, no. I worked 22 hours of overtime in the past few weeks and to not let that extra money I earned go to waste would be a shame. I toiled hard for it, I have to spend it and help the economy. So I went to shop digitally, and it was awesome. No crowds, no parking lots, no more Christmas songs with subliminal messages that urges consumers to spend more. Just me, with a large supply of assorted caffeinated beverages, leftover food from the day before, and my computer.

I didn't visit a lot of sites, however. I only limited my stay at Amazon, Steam and New Egg. But I found some great deals on these sites. Steam is by far the best. They slashed the prices of their games from 25% off to 75% off. From them, I snagged Majesty 2 ($9), Left 4 Dead 2 ($38) and Plants vs. Zombies ($5). From New Egg, I got my godkids some DS games -Chrono Trigger and Elite Beat Agents- for $10 each. Then I bought 3 books for the price of 2 (as stocking stuffers) at Amazon. I also got the hardcover edition of Beautiful Creatures and Catching Fire (sequel to Hunger Games) for less than $10 from them, sweet deal.

All in all, today is the one of the pleasant Black Friday experiences I had in years. Not because there was no mob to trample me (truth be told, I actually missed them). But because I didn't spend a lot (I still have $80 left on my Black Friday budget), and I mostly bought things for myself. So it's all good. Now I have 2 books and 3 more games to keep me entertained throughout the coming winter.

P.S. On a serious note, people do get killed on Black Friday (check here).

Beating the Heat

It's finally summer. Not my favorite season of the year. True, it's not as bad as winter or spring. But I like fall -with its cool temps and colorful trees- better than summer. Summer is just hot and sticky. It has its benefits though, like girls in tank tops and short shorts. But the summer's heat is a big nuisance to me and lessens my quality of life -which, as of now, is limited to gaming and reading.

One might wonder how summer heat can affect gaming and reading. They're done indoors, away from the heat and humidity, unlike outdoor activities like fishing or golf. Well, that's true. But my room turns into a scalding cauldron every time direct sunlight (from 3 to 8 p.m.) seeps through my windows. So I have to abandon my gaming and retreat into the cooler parts of the house. As for reading, it's not affected as much because I can read anywhere. But my books and comics -which are vulnerable to heat, humidity and light damage- are all stored in my room.

Windows with (right glass) and without (left glass) film installed.

So, earlier today, after being sick of stopping mid-game just to avoid the heat and worrying about my books, I went to a couple of hardware and home improvement stores to find a solar curtain. That way, if I have them on, it'll reflect the heat and light outside my room. I didn't find any though. So I bought a roll of window film instead. The store associate told me it works and looks much better than a solar curtain. Applying them, however, since I'm no handyman, was a bit troublesome. I wasted about half of the film roll before I decided to search for an instructional video at YouTube (hooray for the internet!).

But, by the end of the day, I managed to install the films on both my windows. I noticed its effects right away and it's amazing. It's still hot in my room but not as much as before. Plus, my AC unit can also manage the heat now without it huffing and puffing, saving me from big electrical bills. Now I can play games all day long in my room and I have also protected my books. Take that summer heat!

Oh Schmap!!

These days, with the advent of digital photography, one can easily call themselves a "photographer". It's pretty much evident in the blogosphere, where you can find hundreds of picture blogs -most of which are pretty good- chronicling the blogger's collection or the places they've visited through photographs. You'd even see some bloggers out there aspiring to become photographers, saving money for a DSLR, and claiming that they can do better than the others.

For a time, I too did want to try my hand at photography. I was even lining up on the counter, ready to pay for a $600 Canon DSLR. But I changed my mind at the last minute. I don't need a good and expensive camera. Besides pointing and clicking, I have zero knowledge of photography. So investing $600 on a new hobby -that I know nothing about- was a bit of an overkill. Instead, I bought an amplifier, stuck with my guitar and completely forgot about photography.

But a month ago, I received this letter from Schmap:

Hi Skron1,

I am writing to let you know that one of your photos has been short-listed for inclusion in the seventh edition of our Schmap Chicago Guide, to be published early May 2009.
While we offer no payment for publication, many photographers are pleased to submit their photos, as Schmap Guides give their work recognition and wide exposure, and are free of charge to readers. Photos are published at a maximum width of 150 pixels, are clearly attributed, and link to high-resolution originals at Flickr.

Our submission deadline is Wednesday, April 22. If you happen to be reading this message after this date, please still click on the link above (our Schmap Guides are updated frequently - photos submitted after this deadline will be considered for later releases).

Best regards,

Emma Williams,
Managing Editor, Schmap Guides
Looks like I have a bit of knack for photography after all. To learn that one of my photos in Flickr was selected to be published on a website is sort of flattering (you gotta love the internet), and also rekindled my desire to try photography again. But I'm not going to buy a camera though. Because money is tight and this gig might only be a one-hit wonder, a fluke. So I'm going to think this through.

Anyways, my picture was included on the guide and you can find it here.

75-25-60

Life's full of unexpected things. Just when I thought I've hit my own personal recession -at least, for buying games and books to entertain myself- I was surprised when I found three letters in my mail box that'll help me get through with my entertainment crisis.

1. Reward Zone: Premier Silver Card
I don't get stuff from Best Buy as much as I did two years ago. But, what I can't digitally purchase from the net, I still buy from them. Last year, I did a lot major purchases from their stores. A washing machine, a new PC and a camera. So they decided to upgrade my Reward Zone membership to a Premier Silver status. That means I can get rewards much faster. Plus, they also sent me a $75 gift card as a bonus. Nice.

2. Hallmark Insights Certificate
We have an awards program at work that you get a star pin every time somebody writes you a positive letter. If you get enough stars (5 stars, I think), the administrative team will send you a $25 certificate that you can redeem for any gift card on the merchant list. The merchant list is impressive and includes a lot of choices from restaurants (Applebee's, Red Lobster) to stores (Buckle, Barnes & Nobles). They even have Amazon. So I think I'm gonna use this to order some books online.

3. State Tax Refund
I got my Tax Refund earlier than I expected. It's not much ($60) but this will amount to 4-5 books and/or graphic novels.

Well I'm pretty stoked. Now I have to decide which books and games I have to buy for my summer entertainment.

Springing Forward

My request for a week vacation in May have been finally approved. I'm not going anywhere though because I'm saving money for upcoming summer events, a 3rd gen iPod Touch or Zune and an Android G2 Phone. Instead, I'll spend my vacation time doing some home improvement and spring cleaning.

So here's my to do list and schedule:

  • Day 1 - Assemble Garden Set
My Mom bought a garden set last month. But since the set comes with a tiled-top table, we can't put it out because it still rains a lot, and even snows sometimes. It's not a hard thing to do. It'll probably take me half a day to do it.
  • Day 2 and 3 - Fence Painting
It's been only a year since we put up our backyard fence but it really looks shitty now. So I'm planning to paint it. I've been looking at some tools that'll help me do it faster. But, unfortunately, since I'm out of dough, I've decided to do it manually. Nothing keeps you humble like manual labor.
  • Day 4 - Computer Clean-up
Every spring time, I always clean the innards of my computer and free it from dust bunnies. I've missed to clean mine last year so it's probably going to be a handful. Plus, I also got two computers now.
  • Day 5 - Shelving
I've been meaning to put some shelves in our garage, basement and my room for organizing things. But I never got around it. I'm not sure yet if I'm going with a shelf case or just mount some boards into the wall. The former would be more expensive but the latter option will be a time sucker.
  • Day 6 - Improve Wireless Connection
My wireless connection have been terrible from when we moved in this new house. It's because my PC is at end of wall while my router is at the other end. So I'm going to extend the cable and put my router at the middle of the house. I'm also looking at Wireless Repeaters. They're more expensive but it'll save me from the hassle of "wiring".
  • Day 7 - Kick Back
Probably finish a game or a book.
Knowing myself, however, I'd probably finish about only a half of these things. If not for my Mom asking me to do the fence or the garden set, I'd probably won't do it either. Yes, I'm that lazy.

My sister asked me to accompany her to downtown Chicago, again. Like the last time, she needed to go to one of the museums for her art project. This time, however, instead of going to the Campus Museums, she decided to visit The Arts Institute of Chicago.

I've never been inside the Arts Institute of Chicago before. In fact, I tried to stay away from it because its high brow art seems intimidating to me. But my sister insisted (and I was also craving for some of Chicago's deep dish pizza). So I came with her. To my surprise, the place was actually a lot of fun and not that high brow as I thought it was.

Most of the displayed items inside were different types of artifacts from different cultures. Which was a relief to me because I thought that the place was filled with boring paintings. There were a lot of cool artifacts that came from all over the world, ranging from Japan to South America. My favorite would have to be the African sculptures because they were oddly unique. To me, they seemed like action figures -really priceless ones- from the olden days. That's probably why I enjoyed it a lot.

Anyways, you can check out the photos of my favorite artifacts from the museum here. I really enjoyed myself taking these pictures.

NY Jets...Crashes

I'm not talking about the football team. But rather, I'm asking why are there so many plane crashes in New York? Seven plane crashes (that I know of) within these past 8 years, and 5 of them were major airlines.

Anyways, since I've got nothing less tragic to post, I've compiled a list of the seven planes that crashed in NY in the past 8 years.

US Airways Flight 1549. Casualties: 0, Heroes Born: 1.
1. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 (Sept. 11 2001) - These two don't need any descriptions at all. You are a very lucky person if you don't know anything about these crashes.
2. American Airlines Flight 587 (Nov. 12 2001) - This plane crashed into a residential area, two minutes after taking off, due to an engine failure. But during that time, after a couple months of the 911 attacks, people were forming conspiracies that it was another terrorist attacks.
3. Conney Island Plane Crash (May. 21 2005) - A sight-seeing plane crashed at the Coney Island, due to engine failure.
4. 1011 Crash (Oct. 11 2006) - A single engine aircraft crashed on the side of an apartment building in New York. The student pilot, Cory Lidle, a NY Yankees pitcher, and his flight instructor, died.
5. US Airways Flight 1549 (Jan 15 2009) - The plane crashed in the Hudson river and, thankfully, no one died due to the pilot. This is probably one of the most heroic news stories I've heard in my life. They should make a TV film out of this one.
6. Colgan Air Flight 3407 (Feb 13 2009) - The latest and 2nd plane crash in New York this year. The weather, strong winds, fog and light snow, seems to be the cause of the tragedy.
So is there like a mysterious bad mojo in the air space of New York, kinda like the Bermuda Triangle? Is this just a chain of coincidence? Or is it that the national news just happens to cover the crashes in New York and not anywhere else?

Chicago North Loop. Picture was taken from the highest building in the United States, the Sears Tower.

My artsy younger sister who, by the way was featured as a Daily Deviant at Deviant Art (see her profile here) last December, is currently taking art classes that requires her to go to Chicago Museums for their projects. Since I know my way around downtown Chicago she asked me to go with her. At first, I hesitated because I wanted to finish reading 2666. But the weather was so nice, no blizzard, arctic temperatures and wind chills, and my life had been a big whole routine lately. So I thought I could use a little spontaneity, and went out with her. Besides, she was buying lunch.

Me and my sister didn't really do much. We were planning to go to the Field Museums so she could take picture of whatever is being exhibited in there. But we never got around since she found her piece real soon, an Emerald Tree Boa at the Shedd Aquarium. So we just strolled around the city after that, ate a couple Giordano's deep dish pizza (because you can't go to Chicago and not eat one) and decided to go up to the Sears Tower (which I haven't done for 8 years). Then, we went home.

I took some pictures, which can be found here. It's not much though because I didn't really take a lot. It's just weird taking pictures of the city. It makes me feel like a tourist.

Directions to Naboo

Where's Naboo?

I like the Star Wars franchise but I'm not really a hardcore fan. I'm not hardcore because I actually liked the prequel films (and not only because of Natalie Portman), I don't own a Jedi or a Storm Trooper costume, and I know nothing of its expanded universe beyond the Knights of the Old Republic game.

But, man, after looking at this newly released hi-res map of that Galaxy Far Far Away, I couldn't help but appreciate the expanded universe of Star Wars. What only started out as three space opera films, set on an unknown galaxy with a couple named planets, has now grown into this living monolith that is worshiped (or vilified) by many.

Oh, how I wish BioWare will make all these planets available as playable locations in their new MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Out of Time

The one thing I don't like about the holidays is the hectic consumerism. All the good stuff are released around this time. The games, the books, the music and even the movies. It's maddening to pick one out with all the good choices in front of you. But even if you do get everything that you want you won't have the time to fiddle with them because of the parties and such. It sucks.

Anyways, I still have plenty of things to do but I have so little time to do them. Here's all of my activities for the remainder of this year:

Books to read: 3
  • The Stone Gods
  • The Hunger Games
  • Anathem
Games to play: 2
  • Storm of Zehir
  • Disgaea DS
Albums to listen: 4
  • Traced in Air by Cynic
  • Colors (Live) by Between The Buried And Me
  • The Midnight Organ Fight by Frightened Rabbit
  • Eyes Like Brontide by Lights Out Asia
Parties to attend: 3
Days I'm not working: 3
Yup, busy busy. I shouldn't have slept too much. I shouldn't have blogged too much. I shouldn't have stared at the wall too much.

Black Friday 2008

Black Friday, it's almost that day again, the day when The United States celebrates consumerism after Thanksgiving Day. I took a day off at work so I could go this Friday and get my holiday shopping done with. I know, because of the huge sales, the stores will be bedlams. In order to avoid being trampled by rabid mobs of consumers, or getting killed by a mother over a Nintendo DS game, I checked out the leaked Black Friday ads over at BFads, to see what's what, before I head out.

A stampeding horde of Black Friday consumers.

It seems to me that this year's Black Friday is going to be horrible. I thought, since retail sales has plummeted down because of the economy, retailers are going to offer something more enticing so that consumers will pile up outside their doors as early as 3 AM. But the ads just look horrendous. I'm especially disappointed with the lack of deals on newer PC games. The only ones I found, that are worth getting, are Assasin's Creed and BioShock for $10 at Best Buy.

Samsung BD Player.

Nonetheless, there's still some good deals that are worth checking out. Toys R' Us PS2 bundle is very tempting (PS2 with 6 Free Games, "21" DVD and a DVD remote only for $130). Best Buy's Samsung HTDV (40" 1080p LCD for $800), Toshiba Laptop (AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core w/ 3GB Memory and 15" Screen for $380), and Samsung Blu-ray Disc Player for $200 are also worth getting.

As for me, I decided to get a BD player and a Netflix subscription for my parents. We don't have Cable TV anymore and our DVD player died a couple months ago. So, there's little entertainment for my folks in the house. Besides I hate to see that 46" 1080p LCD HDTV they have in our living room go to waste. As for my two godchildren, I'm getting them Lego sets. Can't go wrong with a Lego. Anyways, here's my checklist.
  1. Samsung BD Player ($200)
  2. The Departed BD ($17)
  3. Kung Fu Panda BD ($17)
  4. Assorted Lego Sets x2 (40% off)
It's not much because I'm holding out on the stores. I've yet to see what Amazon has to offer. So, that's that. You guys enjoy your Black Friday, and I hope you find some great deals.

Obama Wins!

Damn, first time I vote for a Presidential Candidate and he wins. Obama had 306 electoral votes, while McCain only had 145. When he finally came out from the primary, defeating Hilary Clinton, I never really thought he'd win. But he did. So I feel like a winner too.

I wish I was in Grant Park right now, celebrating.

Now, I do hope he deliver on that tax cuts of his -which will probably in effect 2-3 years from now, and only to be trampled down if he doesn't get voted for a second term. The bigger the tax cuts, the more money I'll have to help the economy by buying comics, games and music.

The First Election

I hadn't voted for any Presidential Candidate in my life. I was 4 months shy of being 18 years old during the 1998 Presidential Election in the Philippines. So I couldn't vote. I was only an Immigrant during the 2000 and the 2004 US Presidential Election. So I couldn't vote. But, today, as a US Citizen, I finally did.

I went to the polls at 5.45 A.M. and the line was already snaking in front of me, probably almost a hundred people. Then more started pouring in behind me. By the time they opened at 6, there are probably, more or less than, 300 voters waiting in line. I thought this was normal. But the lady in front of me told me it wasn't. Later, I found out that there were more registered voters this time around. Maybe a lot of people are that sick of the Bush Regime that they really want to see some changes. But whatever their...our reasons, we became part of a historical election in the US.

Historical, indeed. But not in the sheer number of registered voters alone. If you look back 40 something years ago, Black men and women had a hard time voting, even though they have the right. They have to take literacy tests and have to pay poll taxes which makes it harder for them to vote. Their employers would fire them, and landlords would evict them from their homes, if they tried to vote. Now, we got a Mulatto (half-black, half-white) running for presidency (who seems to be looking good in the polls as of now). That alone will tell you that the United States have come a long way in just a short period of time.

Anyways, I'm really glad I did vote today, even though I was late for work. You could also tell that other people were happy to vote too. The excitement in the polls is just palpable. Even the weather was so cooperative (70 degrees in a November!). So I did my part and whoever wins tomorrow, McCain or Obama, I don't really care. But I'll definitely wake up to a President who's not Bush. Unless he declares Martial Law tonight. Then this was all for naught, and that would majorly suck.

The Aftermath of Lies

Two things that gave me pause after watching Body of Lies yesterday.

  • After I saw how the CIA operates in the movie, of doing everything that is necessary to protect the US, despite the loss of innocent lives or even undermining the authority of their allies. All of a sudden, Sen. Nene Pimentel's speech back in 2000, that the CIA is responsible for the birth of Abu Sayyaf, doesn't seem to be too far-fetched anymore.
Axl Rose, he can still rock.
  • When I heard the song at the ending credits, I needed to stop and listen to it because it was so damn cool. It has this cool funk, jazz and soul vibe to it, and with a little mid-eastern flair. The voice was definitely Axl Rose's. But I never heard him sing that way so I doubted myself. When I got home, I learned that the song, entitled "If The World", was indeed from Gun N' Roses. Though the song is a departure from the old GNR that we used to know, it just proves that Axl can still rock.
